Windows XP Howto Reinstall Internet Explorer or Outlook Express
Because Internet Explorer and Outlook Express are included within Windows XP, repairing them can be particularly frustrating. I also like the Repair Internet Explorer option found in Add or Remove Programs on any other version of Windows and wish it were available in XP.
The first thing to try is Start -> Run -> SFC /SCANNOW <Enter> which will run the System File Checker and replace any damaged or missing files that it finds.
If you would like to have the repair function or the SFC does not fix your problem, the trick is to set IE and/or OE as not installed in the Windows registry, after which they can be installed from any CD or download you can find.
Two cautions; do not try to install any version lower than 6 on XP and it is always a good idea to backup your registry before editing it.
To reinstall just Internet Explorer:
Start -> Run
To reinstall just Outlook Express:
Start -> Run -> Regedit
To reinstall both Internet Explorer 6 and Outlook Express 6:
Change the values in both of the registry keys
as outlined above.
Once you have made the registry changes, use the link below to download and install Internet Explorer 6 and/or Outlook Express
