Free Computer Virus Software for Personal Use |

For personal use; for students, teachers, and home users, there is a great antiviral package that will cost you nothing. That's right, Zero Dollars! All you need is an Email address to send the serial number to and the patience to wait while it downloads. Now would be a good time to print this page so you will have the instructions available. You will need to reboot and some of the setup happens afterwards. AVG Antivirus, from Grisoft, is excellent antiviral software that has passed numerous international standards tests for it's ability to detect and prevent viruses. It will run on any flavor of Windows, even older versions. This link will open the download page in a new window. Scroll to the bottom and click on the Download button. You will then be asked to enter your name, Email address, and to select your country after which, you will be sent an Email with a link to download the software (AOL 9 users should be warned that it will automatically be placed in the spam folder, because it contains the word "free"). Click on the link in the Email and then on the link on the page which will open. You will then be asked whether to run it from the current location, or save it to disk; click save. If you uncheck the box which says "Close this dialog box when download is complete", you will be prompted to open, open folder, or close, when it is done. While it is downloading, check your Email for another from AVG with the subject of "License code for AVG Free Edition". Write the serial number down and you may want to save the Email for future use. Now that you've gotten your serial number and the download is complete, click on Open in the download complete window and the installation will begin. Click Setup to begin, Next to continue, and Yes to accept the license agreement. When it asks for your serial number, type it in, then click Next. Click Next six times to install it in the default location and then OK to Restart the system. When your system has rebooted, you can skip the Update (you just got the latest version), skip the Emergency Disk (they're not very useful); but, you might want to let it scan your system when it asks to do that. The only change I recommend to the default settings is that you change the number of days between updates from the default of 14 to 1. Double click on the yellow, black, green, and red icon down by the time in your system tray; click the Update Manager tab, and use the down arrow to change the number of days. And your done! You now have state of the art protection and; while there are still Trojans and Worms to deal with, being protected from viruses not only helps you, but also prevents you from infecting others. As always, should you have any questions or problems, please feel free to contact me by Email or by phone. Sincerely, Davis M McCarn |
